The Surgery
We are a small team working in a growing, accredited practice. Our doctors are supported by practice nurses, management and clerical staff all providing high quality care to our patients. We have three consulting rooms and a treatment room. The practice is situated in a heritage listed shopfront building with pressed tin walls and solid wood floors. Our surgery has a focus on education and teaching, and we actively support medical students from both Western Australia (through the rural clinical school) and throughout Australia (through the John Flynn scholarship program). Denmark Health Services The practice works cooperatively with nearby practices and the local hospital. Doctors may choose to have admitting rights to the local hospital. There are opportunities to practice minor surgery and emergency medicine (one in six on call), as well as other specialties such as sports medicine, occupational medicine and palliative care. Denmark has a beautiful new hospital, opened February 2009, which is not currently working at full capacity. It has five acute beds (potentially ten) and ten residential care beds (potentially 22) and one respite care. The new emergency area has three beds and is state of the art. The X-ray machine, manned by trained nursing staff, has capacity for chest and limb X-rays and we have a visiting weekly ultrasonographer from Albany Hospital. A full domiciliary nursing and home and community care team are based at the hospital, and an excellent homely delivery ward with large bath and own patio awaits midwifery staff to become operational. The hospital serves an area from Walpole (65 kilometres to the west) to Youngs Siding (20 kilometres to the east). The doctors work on call 1:6 roster. This becomes busy in the summer tourist season when the population trebles, but quiet in winter when the elderly caravan up north and only the football matches provide exciting trauma medicine! A very good working relationship with all doctors exists. The hospital also employs a palliative care nurse and has a specific hospice ward, a continence nurse, and visiting specialists include physiotherapist, occupational therapist, speech therapist, psychiatrist, eye specialist, psychologist, sex therapist, cardiologist and ultrasonographer. |
Albany Regional Hospital Albany Regional Hospital is 55 kilometres away and is our main back up hospital. Patients travel privately or by ambulance, while the Royal Flying Doctor Service comes to either Albany or Denmark in emergency. Albany Regional Hospital has a very competent resident surgeon, a gynaecologist, orthopaedic surgeon, widely experienced general physician, palliative care physician and ophthalmologists. Obstetrics is handled by GP specialists. The hospital also has an Aged Care Assessment Team, psychiatrists and a high security ward. There is an excellent private radiology clinic (no MRI!) with a radiologist very skilled in interventional techniques. Visiting specialists/specialist areas to Albany include:
